Majority black female-owned Akhona Mining Services aims for continuity of operational excellence

Akhona Mining Services’ roots in the mining sector started in 2020 when a sister company owned by Akhona’s founders won a bid for a Mine Rehabilitation project for a major mining house outside of Middelburg.

Through strategic partnerships, Akhona has extended its services to include Materials Handling and Tailings Management and it has recruited highly experienced relevant industry personnel to support its ability to execute projects on time and on budget.

The company’s shareholding consists of:

  • Akhona Group – a 100% black women owned investment holding company;
  • 777FL – a mining-focused investment vehicle; and
  • F11 Pty Ltd.

Ms Noluthando Gosa (from Akhona Group), who fulfils the role of CEO, is no stranger to the industry and is a member of the advisory boards of Invest In Africa Mining Indaba and the Southern Africa-Canada Chamber of Business. She is a successful business owner and entrepreneur whose strategic acquisitions include investments in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. As a strong proponent and advocate for empowering women in the workplace, she is eager to see more growth and employment of women and female-owned businesses within the sector.

Thato Makgolane (from 777FL) is an entrepreneur and previously a successful investment banker, who has worked for listed goldmining companies and is well versed in the South Africa’s mining and related sectors. Akhona Mining Services will benefit from his strong financial acumen and experience in the mining sector.

Frans Baleni (from F11), a former trade unionist with vast experience in mining and energy, holds the position of non-executive Chairman as well as chairing the safety, health and employment governance committee. Baleni brings his sound commercial, risk, governance and compliance skills to Akhona Mining Services, and the company will benefit from his invaluable experience, networks and expertise in health and safety; government relations and collective bargaining processes; negotiations; industrial relations and human resources.

“Going forward, using our networks and empowerment profile, we will build on the delivery platform we have acquired, while remaining centred on providing the world-class service our mining clients are accustomed to,” says Ms. Gosa. “Our executive team will support our operational teams across the country, and we’ll focus on further strengthening existing partnerships, and growing the business by procuring new projects and clients.”
